Short answer
RMHCI means Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern. RCSWI means Registered Clinical Social Worker Intern. RMFTI means Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern. All three are Florida registrations that let you practice under a Board-approved supervisor while you earn hours toward a full license.
These letters tell readers which Florida licensure path you are on. The Board has separate counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy requirements. A graduate degree alone is not the same as an issued intern registration.
Which full license does each intern credential lead to?
Each registration leads toward the license in its own profession, after the Board’s experience, exam, and application steps.
| Letters | Full registration name | Full license | Example after a name |
|---|---|---|---|
| RMHCI | Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern | LMHC | Jane Doe, MS, RMHCI |
| RCSWI | Registered Clinical Social Worker Intern | LCSW | Jane Doe, MSW, RCSWI |
| RMFTI | Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern | LMFT | Jane Doe, MS, RMFTI |
The examples show common letter styles, not the full wording required in advertising. Use your actual degree and registration.
Can a registered intern call themself a therapist?
Describe your work accurately and make your intern status clear. Section 491.0149(2)(b), Florida Statutes, requires the full registered-intern title on promotional materials. The short letters alone do not replace that wording on cards, websites, ads, or signs. Do not present yourself as an LMHC, LCSW, or LMFT before that full license is issued. Ask the Board about any title or advertisement you are unsure of.
How long does a Florida intern registration last?
It lasts five years and cannot be renewed under section 491.0045, Florida Statutes. The Board lists options for expiring interns. Plan the experience and exam well before the end date.
When can an intern start counting experience?
Start counting only after the Board issues your registration and approves your qualified supervisor. Each Board profession page explains the approval sequence. Keep records of dates, client hours, and supervision. A work title on its own does not make hours count.
Where should you check your profession’s requirements?
- RMHCI, counseling intern requirements
- RCSWI, clinical social work intern requirements
- RMFTI, marriage and family therapy intern requirements

Frequently asked questions
What does RMHCI stand for?
It stands for Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern. It is Florida’s counseling intern registration. The full license pursued is LMHC.
Does MSW, RCSWI mean someone is licensed?
It means the person lists a Master of Social Work degree and a Florida clinical social work intern registration. RCSWI is not the full LCSW license. Check the person’s current status with the Board.
Can I use only RMHCI on my website?
No. Florida law requires the full registered mental health counselor intern wording on promotional materials. You may also use your letters, but do not omit the required words.
Do all three intern registrations last five years?
Section 491.0045 sets a five-year, nonrenewable period for registered interns under this chapter. Check your own issuance and expiration dates with the Board. Plan early if the date is near.
Does a supervisor’s agreement make my hours count immediately?
No. Wait for the Board to issue the registration and approve that qualified supervisor. Save the approval and keep the required experience record.
