Headway vs. Grow Therapy: My Experience Using Both
Headway has paid me more per session. Grow Therapy paneled me faster and has sent me more referrals. Here is how I think about the tradeoff, and why I currently use both.

The short answer
In my experience as a Florida LMHC, Headway has been stronger for reimbursement, while Grow Therapy has been stronger for fast paneling and referral volume. Headway pays me more per session for the payers and services I use, but it took longer to panel me and has generated very few direct referrals. Grow pays me somewhat less per session, but I was paneled with my first payer within about one week and have received considerably more referrals through the platform.
If your contracts and practice setup allow it, you may not have to choose only one. Both platforms are free for clinicians to join, and both can connect with an external calendar.

Where Headway has been stronger for me
Higher reimbursement per session
Headway currently pays me the most per session among the insurance platforms I have tried. Rates depend on payer, state, license type, CPT code, and contract timing, but the difference has been meaningful for my Florida practice and payer mix.

Useful practice infrastructure
Support has generally been helpful, and the platform handles much of the administrative work associated with insurance, including credentialing, eligibility, claims, and payment. It also includes scheduling, documentation, messaging, and other EHR-related features.
The main limitation: few referrals
Headway has not been a strong source of new clients for me. I see it as especially useful for therapists who already have referral sources and want help accepting insurance at competitive rates.
A strong Psychology Today profile, professional network, or website may still matter.
Best shorthand
Headway has functioned more like an insurance-administration and reimbursement tool for me than a dependable referral source.
Where Grow Therapy has been stronger for me
Very fast onboarding and paneling
I went from signing up to being paneled with my first payer in about one week. Grow currently says providers may be credentialed with a first payer within 5 to 7 days after completing all submission requirements, but timelines vary.
More direct referrals
Grow has sent me considerably more referrals than Headway. Referral volume depends on location, insurance participation, specialty, profile quality, availability, and local demand, so another therapist may have a different result.
Additional marketing support
Grow’s provider program can cover and manage Psychology Today and Zocdoc profiles for eligible clinicians who opt in and remain open to referrals. Review current program terms and how inquiries are handled before participating.
The tradeoff: lower rates for me

Why I think using both can make sense
For me, the platforms serve different purposes. Headway provides stronger reimbursement, while Grow provides faster access to some panels and more referral activity. Because neither currently charges clinicians a membership fee, using both can create a useful balance.
What using both can add
- More payer and referral options: one platform may have access or demand that the other does not.
- Less dependence on one company: your caseload is not tied to one administrative system.
- Real-world comparison: you can evaluate your own rates, referrals, and support.
What requires care
- Keep external calendar events marked as busy.
- Check that each calendar is updating correctly.
- Leave buffers if delayed syncing could cause conflicts.
- Schedule and bill each client through the correct system.

Which platform may fit you better?
Headway may fit better if you:
- Already generate many of your own referrals
- Prioritize the strongest available reimbursement
- Want insurance billing and credentialing support
- Are comfortable waiting longer for some payer panels
Grow Therapy may fit better if you:
- Want to begin paneling as quickly as possible
- Need more help generating new client inquiries
- Value external profile and marketing support
- Accept a possible rate tradeoff for referral volume
What to compare before joining
Do not choose a platform based only on a referral offer or another therapist’s experience. Ask for the details that affect your actual practice:
- Rates for your state, license type, payer, and most-used CPT codes
- Which payers are open in your location
- Estimated paneling timelines and possible delays
- Payment schedule and denial support
- Documentation and treatment-plan requirements
- Cancellation and late-cancellation policies
- Referral volume for your specialty and availability
- How external marketing inquiries are managed
- Calendar sync behavior and possible delays
- Contract terms for moving clients or leaving

My verdict
There is no universal winner
Headway has been better for my per-session pay. Grow Therapy has been better for paneling speed and referrals. If I already had an established flow of clients and cared most about reimbursement, I would lean toward Headway. If I were trying to build a caseload quickly, I would lean toward Grow Therapy.
In my own practice, the strengths are complementary enough that keeping both makes sense.
